Name Symmetry - Portfolio Cover Design

Students designed the front of their classroom portfolios using their first name as the starting point for a reflected, symmetrical design. Ultimately, they could create an imaginary creature, or place; or simply play with color, pattern and shape. Here are some of the results of the different ways students completed this design challenge as well as the project rubric and instructions.

Craft In America - Slab Pottery

We start exploring ceramic craft traditions in America by looking at two very different artists, George Ohr from Biloxi, Mississippi and Maria Martinez from San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico. Following is a sample of our Heart and Soul (Sole) project which is done as a slab project that includes texture from the soles of our shoes. The "double" bonus here was the opportunity to reach across the curriculum to language arts with the use of our homophone.

Circumpolar North-Aurora Paintings

Check out these awesome Northern Lights watercolors that the Ryan Middle School students created. They used their choices of watercolor techniques practiced in the technique sheets to create several potential sky paintings before choosing one (or two or three :) to finish with additional refinements like dry brush technique to make the dark sky darker to contrast with their brilliant aurora's. They then finished with a dark sky line silhouette created by mixing dark blue and brown paint rather than resorting to black.
